Cheeseburger Buns Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3-1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef

  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 8 slices process American cheese, quartered

Directions

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 4-6 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in tomato sauce. Remove from the heat; set aside.
  • Punch dough down; divide into 16 pieces. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out and stretch each piece into a 5-in. circle. Top each circle with two pieces of cheese and about 3 tablespoons beef mixture. Bring dough over filling to center; pinch edges to seal.
  • Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 20 minutes. Bake at 400° for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers. Yield: 16 sandwiches.

This is my favorite freezer cooking recipe, these taste great reheated. I just prepare as directed, bake several minutes (but not until golden, only until dough appears baked), wrap individually in foil, freeze and when reheating remove foil, wrap in paper towel and heat 2 mins or so in microwave. I make this exact recipe and a variation with pizza filling instead, always a hit! I have officially quit buying hot pockets!

I put deli ham and cheddar cheese in the middle. This was a huge hit with picky eaters and the teens loved them! I've left out the middle and served these as dinner rolls which went quick!

I haven't frozen this exact recipe, but have frozen another very similar one and they work great. I just pop 'em frozen into the microwave on a low power level. They don't get soggy at all and taste wonderful.

These took some time but turned out really good. I spiced the meat up with Tex Joy and did american and Jack cheese.

Family favorite! I've made with frozen whole wheat bread also. Almost a 5, but I often have trouble with the juices/cheese leaking out. It is a little time consuming to wrap them all, so I don't make them regularly.

Took these to a potluck and went down a storm. Everyone loved 'em. I think this filling sounds too simple. Many fillings would be great, but my favourite is adding tomato puree instead of sauce and adding spices like cinnamon, thyme, garlic, bay leaves and use mozza instead of cheddar or processed cheese. My hubby can't wait for me to make 'em again.

i have made this recipe for years and years and for every party or holiday occasion you will find these on my table. i make them half the size because most of my audiance is children who are usually to busy to eat. Great recipe and one of my favs.

These are so easy and so good. (try dipping them in ketchup to eat) And yes, these freeze really well, we just thaw/warm them in the microwave wrapped in a paper towel.

No matter what filling I put in these, they are always a hit. Sloppy joe, roast beef and peppers, pizza type fillings. You can make so many different combos. I would love to know if anyone has tried to freeze them and then reheat them. Like hot pockets?

I too have been making these for years. My family loves them. I make 2 batches everyday during deer season using deer sausage and moozeralla cheese. They taste the same as leftovers the next day heating them up in the microwave for 1 minute.

I have been making these for years. My son loves them! They also freeze well. I do the dough in the bread machine and it has come out perfect every time of the many dozens I have probably made them.

 

Shortcut: Just brown ground beef and onion and garlic. Put it on the dough circles. Squeeze ketchup over and top with cheese. 

 

You also can use other fillings. Like chicken with cream of chicken soup and green onions we like. Or ham and cream of mushroom with diced cooked potatoes.

 

This is one of the top 10 recipes ever to come out of TOH.

We loved these! I didn't quite have enough filling to make 16 so I made a couple with ham and cheese. My kids ate these so fast they were gone in no time. I definately need to make a double batch with my family. The dough/bread is excellent. I will now use this dough recipe for my bierocks. I am going to try pizza toppings in some like another reviewer said just to see what that tastes like. This recipe is a keeper and I will make often. Thanks!

This dough is wonderful...tried ham and cheese, it was great, they are like hot pockets only much cheaper to make and they do freeze great, also tried filling with cream cheese beaten with a little sugar and raspberry jam, they were great. Definitely something I will make frequently.

These are great! My picky husband had 3 and requested the leftovers for lunch the next day. The dough is fantastic! I'm going to try the dough recipe for dinner rolls, it was so good. Mine took the times listed to rise.

These took an hour to rise the first time and another hour to do the 2nd rise... plan extra time into your schedule if you are cooking these. The dough is wonderful to work with though! We filled ours with sloppy joe mix, turned out yummy!

I always make a double batch of these. One is the regular recipe and the other is adapted for pizza fillings. I freeze one batch - they reheat wonderfully!
