Here's an eye-catching salad that my mother makes for Christmas dinner each year. You can choose different flavors to make other color combinations for specific holidays or other gatherings. -Jan Hemness, Stockton, Missouri

7 Layer Gelatin Salad Recipe
  • Prep: 30 min. + chilling
  • Yield: 15-20 Servings
30 30

Ingredients

  • 7 packages (3 ounces each) assorted flavored gelatin
  • 4-1/2 cups boiling water, divided
  • 4-1/2 cups cold water, divided
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk, divided
  • 1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • Fresh mint, sliced strawberries and kiwifruit, optional

Directions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve one package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Add 3/4 cup cold water; stir. Spoon into a 13-in. x 9-in. dish coated with cooking spray. Chill until set but not firm, about 40 minutes.
  • In another bowl, dissolve another package of gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water. Add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup milk; stir. Spoon over the first layer. Chill until set but not firm, about 40 minutes.
  • Repeat five times, alternating plain gelatin layers with creamy gelatin layers. Chill each layer until set but not firm before spooning next layer on top. Refrigerate entire salad overnight. Just before serving, spread top with whipped topping. Cut into squares to serve. Garnish with mint and fruit if desired. Yield: 15-20 servings.

Editor's Note: This recipe takes time to prepare since each layer must be set before the next layer is added.

Tip

Carefully Add Layers

When making a layered gelatin salad, it's helpful to gently spoon (rather than pour) each layer onto the previous layer of gelatin so it doesn't break through the other layers. —Janet Biersach, Mauston, Wisconsin

I love the way the colors come out and you can change them to suit the holidays, or event you are making it for.

I've been making this gelatin recipe for about 25 years now and use unflavored gelatin in with my flavored galatin and evaporated milk. It's always a big hit and everyone loves to pull the layers apart to eat! I'll have to try this recipe for the holidays and see how my guest likes it. It certainly isn't a finger food...

Everyone at dinner loved the idea of the layers! The next time I make this, I will follow the photo for the layering, as I had substituted two of the gelatines for other flavors (didn't have the originals on hand), and the color combination I ended up with wasn't as pretty as the posted recipe, but the family thought it was great anyway (they didn't see the photo). I substituted non-dairy creamer for the evaporated milk, as my daughter has lactose intolerance. No one knew the difference, and the layers set up nicely. A really fun recipe for special occasions!

This dessert is awesome. I make 3 at a time to go with our meals at church. Everyone loves it. Kids and adults like the way it looks and tastes! Definitely a crowd pleaser! You have to make it the day before though and it takes a good 2-3 hours but well worth it and easy to make!

I made this for my daughter's 7th birthday and it was a huge hit! It took time to make but the flavors blend so well and it looked gorgeous! I'm curious to try it with sugar-free jello next time.

I made this for my brothers party! It was a hit with all the little ones! It took awhile to make, but the finished product was pretty! And quite yummy!
