I also have room for family heirlooms, including a pedestal dining table, hoosier cabinet, corncrib and washstand.

Nostalgic Six-burner StoveI’ve accented the room with sunflowers, chickens and birds. Years ago, I started raising birds as a hobby, and it turned into a business. I have guineas, geese, doves, cockatiels, lovebirds, parakeets and one geriatric turkey…as well as cows, donkeys, two dogs and two cats.

I love to cook, so my kitchen is well stocked with a built-in microwave, a convection oven and a nostalgic-looking electric stove. Having six burners really helps—especially with the constant flow of family dropping in. Max passed away last year, but our three grown children live in the area, and two teenage grandchildren live with me.

A Chat in Family Heirloom RockersFriends frequently stop by, too, and are drawn to the cozy sitting area with old family rocking chairs and a small wood-burning cookstove.

I wanted this new room to celebrate the past while inviting people to enjoy one another…and I think we succeeded. Maybe the best compliment came when a young teen who’d been “dragged” over by her mom said, “Wow, this is like living in Cracker Barrel, only better!”
