What Should be the Nutritional Breakdown of a 1,300 Calorie Diet

Peggy Woodward, RD

DEAR PEGGY: I'm following a diet of about 1,300 calories a day. Based on that number of calories, how many grams of protein, fiber and fat should I consume on a daily basis? —J. B., Pleasant Hill, Missouri

It's generally recommended that your calories should be:

  • 60% Carbohydrates
  • 30% Fat
  • 10% Protein

In a 1,300 calorie-a-day diet, that equals:

  • 585-845 calories or 146 to 211 grams from carbohydrates
  • 130-455 calories or 33 to 114 grams from protein
  • 260-455 calories or 29 to 51 grams from fat

Also, women should aim to include about 21-25 grams of fiber each day.
