Layered Cake Is Doubly Delightful
The torte looks luscious when two cake layers are sliced into four layers and spread with sweetened whipped cream. But you don't have to split hairs to split the cakes into layers. Just follow these steps:
After the cake layers have cooled, insert toothpicks around the outside of each layer halfway up the side. Make sure the toothpicks are at the same level and lined up evenly around the cake.
Place a long serrated knife at the edge of one cake layer, gently resting the blade flat on the toothpicks. Carefully slice the cake horizontally, keeping the cake in place with your other hand. Use the toothpicks as guides to keep the layers even while cutting.
Repeat with second cake layer. Discard toothpicks and finish as recipe directs.
