Quick Chocolate-Covered Candy

Making candy doesn't need to be a time-consuming task. Here's a simple recipe for making chocolate-covered treats. Chop eight 1-ounce squares of semisweet chocolate. Melt chocolate and 1 teaspoon shortening in a microwave or heavy saucepan; stir until smooth. Dip fresh or dried fruit, nuts, pretzels or cookies in chocolate; let excess chocolate drip off. Place on waxed paper until set. Or stir chopped nuts, flaked coconut, raisins or chow mein noodles into the melted chocolate. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper and let stand until set. Store the chocolate candies in an airtight container.
