Tips for Dressing Up Plain Cakes
For Black Forest Torte, prepare a chocolate or fudge cake mix in a 13-inch x 9-inch x 2-inch baking pan; cool. Spoon a 21-ounce can of cherry pie filling over the top of the cake. Spread 4 cups sweetened whipping cream over the pie filing and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
To make an Angel Food Ice Cream Cake, slice a prepared angel food cake in thirds horizontally. Place bottom layer on a platter. Spread 1/2 quart of softened ice cream or frozen yogurt over cake; top with middle cake layer. Spread another 1/2 quart of ice cream or yogurt over cake; add top cake layer. Freeze at least 2-3 hours before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream.
For a quick fruit filling for a layer cake, spread 1/2 cup fruit preserves between the layers of a prepared white or yellow cake. Frost top and sides of cake with Buttercream Frosting.
